What is a mammogram

A digital mammography/mammogram is a high-resolution x-ray of the breasts, performed by our experienced and gentle radiographers in Parklane Radiology’s consulting rooms. Mammograms are used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. This type of mammogram is called a screening mammogram. Screening mammograms usually involve two or more x-ray pictures, or images, of each breast. X-ray images make it possible to detect tumors that cannot be felt. Screening mammograms can also find microcalcifications (tiny calcium deposits) that sometimes indicate the presence of breast cancer.

When should women have mammograms?

Parklane Radiology’s recommendation is an annual mammogram for women over 40, regardless of family history or supposed risk factors.

80% of breast cancer patients have NO family history/risk factors. Breast cancers often develop in 18 – 24 months meaning that the optimal time interval between mammograms is one year. This timing has been shown in several large studies to decrease the number of fatal breast cancers in the population. Early detection of breast cancer leads to lower-stage cancers at presentation and improved survival!

Quick

Mammograms take less than one hour to complete so can easily be done during lunchtime or before heading to work.

Pain-Free

Thanks to the latest 3D technology, mammograms are pain-free with minimal discomfort.

Aid By Most Medical Aid Screening Benefits

Even if you’re on a basic hospital plan, most medical aids pay for mammograms from screening benefits, not medical savings. Call Parklane Radiology, Women’s Imaging Centre, with your medical aid number and they’ll confirm your coverage or give you a price for cash payments.

Early Detection – The Best Chance to Beat Breast Cancer

Early detection saves lives. Mammograms are able to detect breast issues early, to give you the best options to ensure your breasts remain healthy and cancer free.
