What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders caused by misalignment of the joints of the body termed ‘subluxations’.
Chiropractors practice a drug-free, hands-on approach and correct these misalignments through spinal manipulation or ‘chiropractic adjustment’. These subluxations can be precipitated by many factors such as acute traumatic injury and incorrect sitting, to name a few, They then cause physical and chemical changes to the injured tissues resulting in inflammation, pain, and diminished function.
The restoration of motion through the adjustment leads to a relief of symptoms and a decrease in pain.

Chiropractic Treatment
Your initial consultation will involve a detailed history and physical examination comprising various orthopedic and neurological tests to best diagnose your condition. In this practice, chiropractors make use of many techniques and modalities. The primary two methods of treatment are diverse chiropractic techniques and myofascial dry needling.
The diversified technique is the most commonly used chiropractic technique which is the implementation of a high velocity, low amplitude thrust in the direction of the restricted range of movement of a particular joint in order to restore motion and reduce pain.
Myofascial dry needling is the use of solid filiform needles or ‘acupuncture’ needles for the treatment of muscular pain, also known as intramuscular stimulation. The needle is inserted into the skin and directly into the myofascial trigger point responsible for the pain. A trigger point is a band of multiple contraction knots which are related to the production and maintenance of the pain cycle. Pain relief is achieved by the release of endogenous opioids when the needle is inserted correctly.
Meet Dr.Robin Maris
Dr. Robin Maris qualified as a chiropractor from Wits Technicon (now UJ) in 2003 and has been in private practice in Melrose Arch since and is one of the renowned chiropractors in Johannesburg.
The Melrose Arch chiropractic clinic is located inside the Virgin Active Classic gym.
In 2011, Dr. Maris was asked to join ear, nose, and throat surgeon Dr. Lance Maron in his Park Lane practice – The Voice and Swallowing Centre. This led to Dr. Maris completing his Masters’s degree in Speech Pathology at the University of Witwatersrand (WITS) in 2018 and he now has a particular interest in treating patients with vocal issues alongside a multidisciplinary team consisting of an ear, nose, and throat surgeon, audiologist and speech pathologist.
As the Park Lane practice is in the Voice and Swallowing Centre, most chiropractic cases treated there are head and neck related but Dr. Maris also treats other chiropractic cases at this location such as back pain, sporting, work, and stress-related injuries, muscular strains and ligament sprains.
About Chiropractic Care Chiropractors
Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and can also provide therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, lifestyle, dietary and nutritional advice. They also make use of several other modalities such as myofascial dry needling, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, massage, stretching, ultrasound, and strapping. Chiropractors assess patients through clinical examination, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory testing to determine the best treatment. If the patient’s condition does not warrant chiropractic care or requires co-management with another health care discipline, the chiropractor will readily refer.
